Price leading Australian on Nationwide
Monday, 7 May 2012
Nationwide Tour rookie Hudson Swafford fired a nine-under 62 to clinch a one-stroke victory at the Stadion Classic in Georgia, while New South Welshman Aron Price was the best placed Australian.
Price shared 16th place with New Zealander Steve Alker, while fellow Australian Andre Stolz was next best in a tie for 27th.
American Swafford put a 17-under 267 total on the board - the lowest in the three years the event has been held at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
The 24-year-old from Florida started the final day five shots off the pace and was further back when he bogeyed the first hole.
But from that point he birdied four holes before the turn and added a 30 on the back nine to win by one shot from Luke List and Lee Janzen.
Swafford's best finish in seven previous starts this season had been a tie for 16th place and he faced a nervous wait before the victory was confirmed as List bogeyed his final hole, 90 minutes after Swafford entered the clubhouse.
Nationwide Tour star List and two-time U.S. Open champion Janzen both carded six-under 65s to share second at 16-under.
Third-round leader Tyrone van Aswegen (70) struggled to make birdies and fell to fifth at 14 under.
Season points leader Michael Allen, who was going for his third consecutive win, finished five shots back after carding a 71.
The Nationwide Tour now has a one week break before the BMW Charity Pro Am event in South Carolina.
