The PGA of Australia would like to wish Life Member Mr Al Howard OAM a very Happy Birthday.

Today, Mr Howard celebrates his 99th birthday, this significant milestone making him the oldest Australian PGA Professional.

Mr Howard joined the PGA of Australia in 1931 having a long and distinguished career in which he was one the first Professionals to combine a playing and vocational career.

He followed in his father Tom Howard’s footsteps by becoming a PGA Professional, his father is a former Australian PGA Championship winner.

Throughout his time Mr Howard was the Head Professional at Woollahra and Cromer Golf Clubs as well as Monash and Rosnay courses.

He went on to become a renowned course architect; Howard’s repertoire of work includes the Tasmania Golf Club, Dalby Golf Club, Auburn Golf Club and Woolooware Golf Club.

Mr Howard was also a respected golf columnist and gave back to his Association by being the Chairman of the NSW PGA in 1950.

We wish Mr Howard continued health and happiness for the year ahead

To the PGA, thank you for acknowledging Dad's birthday, he tells me the planning has already started for the big one in 2013.

Happy birthday Al. Thank you for your work at Melville Glades Golf Club in Western Australia. The course layout is loved by the members to this day. Thank you also for the afternoon we spent together on the verandah at The Lakes during the 2010 Australian Open. It was a great thrill for me.

If Mr Howard doesn't inspire PGA Members to bigger and better things, I don't know who can - 99 is not a "significant milestone" its a monumental milestone - a very happy birthday to you Mr Howard and we will celebrate your 100th next year ! Duncan Moodie
