Only three Australians managed to make the halfway cut at the Wyndham Classic, with veteran Rod Pampling the closest challenger to outright leader Jimmy Walker.

Pampling fired a second round of 66 to be in a share of 14th place at six-under, some six shots behind American Walker.

Walker picked up eight birdies without a single bogey during his second round to sit at 12-under overall and leads fellow American and defending champion Webb Simpson by a solitary stroke.

Simpson added a seven-under 63 to his opening round of 66 and is one shot clear of a group of four players in outright second.

Spaniard Sergio Garcia, Swede Carl Pettersson, South African Tim Clark and American Harris English are all tied for third at 10-under, while Matt Every and Bud Cauley share seventh a further stroke adrift.

There are a host of big names within striking distance, with Brandt Snedeker (-6), Jason Dufner (-5), Nick Watney (-5) and Charl Schwartzel (-5) all well placed and ready to stake their claim on the weekend.

Australia's Stuart Appleby struggled on the greens during his second round, but still managed a 71 to sit in a share of 54th place at two-under, while compatriot Nick O'Hern made the halfway cut by the barest of margins after his round of 71.

The cut was made at minus one, with veteran John Daly (E), South African Rory Sabbatini (+1) and 2004 British Open champion Todd Hamilton (+2) among the big names to miss out.

Australians Gavin Coles (E), Matt Jones (E), Steven Bowditch (+1), Nathan Green (+4), Robert Allenby (+4) and Mathew Goggin (+6) joined them as 77 players moved through to the final two days of play.
